Neo-Codion is a prescription medication used for the symptomatic treatment of dry, irritating coughs in adults. It contains the opiate cough suppressant codeine, along with sulfogaiacol and grindelia extract. Active Ingredients: Codeine camphosulphonate (equivalent to approximately 14.93 mg of codeine base per tablet), sulfogaiacol, and grindelia extract. Mechanism: Codeine acts on the cough center in the brain to suppress the cough reflex. Sulfogaiacol acts as an expectorant (though combining a cough suppressant with an expectorant is generally not recommended), and grindelia has antitussive properties. Indications: It is indicated for non-productive (dry) coughs. It should not be used for coughs that produce phlegm, as coughing is a natural defense mechanism to clear the airways. Dosage and Administration: It is reserved for adults, taken orally, with an interval of at least 6 hours between doses, and a maximum of 4 doses per day. The treatment duration should be short, typically a few days. Availability: The medication is available in tablet and syrup forms in various countries. In France, some forms have been discontinued as of late 2024 and early 2025, and a secure prescription is now required for purchase due to potential for abuse and dependence. Important Cautions and Contraindications Prescription Only: Neo-Codion is a prescription drug and should not be used without medical consultation. Dependence and Abuse: Prolonged use of codeine can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Side Effects: Common side effects include constipation, somnolence (sleepiness), dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. It can impair the ability to drive or operate machinery, an effect heightened by alcohol consumption. Contraindications: Do not use if you have respiratory insufficiency, asthma-related cough, or if you are breastfeeding. It is also contraindicated in children under 12 years of age and in individuals known to be “ultra-rapid metabolizers” of codeine, due to the risk of morphine toxicity. Interactions: Avoid alcohol during treatment. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications you are taking, especially sedatives or other opioid-containing products, as combining them can increase the risk of serious side effects like respiratory depression.
