Dihydrocodeine

Dihydrocodeine is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic, used primarily to treat moderate to severe pain. It’s chemically related to codeine and morphine, and like them, it works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing the perception of pain.

• Strength: Stronger than codeine, but weaker than morphine
• Forms: Tablets, extended-release tablets, oral solutions
• Often combined with: Paracetamol (acetaminophen) or aspirin for enhanced pain relief

• Moderate to severe pain (e.g., post-operative pain, injury)
• Chronic pain conditions (sometimes)
• Occasionally used for cough suppression (in low doses)

• Like other opioids, dihydrocodeine can cause:

• Respiratory depression (especially in high doses)

• Those with head injuries or risk of intracranial pressure
• Young children (without medical supervision)
