Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant commonly used to treat:
- Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Narcolepsy
- It is often sold under brand names like Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, and Daytrana (a transdermal patch).
π¬ How It Works:
Methylphenidate increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake. This improves attention, focus, and impulse control.
π Forms and Dosage:
- Immediate-release (IR): Effects last ~3β4 hours.
- Extended-release (ER or XR): Effects can last 8β12 hours.
- Available in tablets, capsules, and patches.

- Common:
- Insomnia
- Decreased appetite
- Increased heart rate
- Anxiety or irritability
- Headache
